Icicle: Arrows
Been listening to this song too much this week. Whenever I pee, it comes out in an arctic aqua color.
Squarepusher: Vic Acid
Here's an interesting case where I've had this song since the original Napster days, just as a single track with no album context. I've even bought a bunch of Squarepusher albums trying to find the damn song. And of course, none of the damn albums I've found were even that good. So I go to find the video, and this one wasn't on YouTube and I used my best Paul-Giamatti-in-Sideways voice to say "I'm not going to have my fucking second track not show up!" and after starting up 60+ videos, I realized the song I had was misnamed. +1 for persistence.
Lovage: To Catch a Thief
That Boston-area hipster record store I worked at had the poster for this album in the bathroom, and I'd always laugh when I saw it and ended up pissing all over the walls, although that's something I do in most public restrooms anyways.
Maqssive Attack: Inertia Creeps
Tirp-hop, man, remember when trip-hop was going to be the next big thing, that perfect fusion of hip-hop and industrial and shoegaze mopery? 1997, why did you leave me behind?
Del the Funky Homosapien: Worldwide
Like the guy in this song who says he’ll “Kick your bitch in the tits,” I'm also a big believer in etiquette. So if I'm sitting next to you in the lesbian coffee shop and I sneeze and you don't say gesundheit, next time I sneeze, I'm going to sneeze in your face. Because manners are important.
Cypress Hill: Hits From the Bong
One of my friends said the other week that listening to Cypress Hill is like having his 5-year old son ask him for things. Then he did the Cypress Hill voice: “Daddy, I want toys! Daddy, I want some dessert!”
Wu-Tang Clan: C.R.E.A.M.
I have a hazy-ass memory of my friend named DJ Uniq in early high school rapping over the instrumental version of this song, so now I'll forever link it in my mind with red Christmas lights and incense smoke. Some time after that, MC Uniq went to California, took part in a driveby, and got shot in the ribs. HARD KNOCKS LIFE.
Dismemberment Plan: I Love a Magician
A few months ago, there was a magazine article about the ten-year anniversary of this album coming out, and how it means so much to so many people, how anybody who ever listened to it can remember the distinct period of their life when they were listening to this album over and over again. I went back and gave it another shot (having only had the album proper for less than a year) and I came away thinking this song I'm going to play now was one of only two really memorable songs.
The Melvins: Dr. Geek
Wanna get your ass beat by muscular music snobs? Tell him that you never really got all the way into the Melvins.
McLusky: Icarus Smicarus
I recently started messing around on this website called Turntable.fm (see new link!) which is one part DJing and one part clowning in chat rooms like it’s AOL95 all over again. There’s a rudimentary voting/cred-builder application. It all adds up to a delightful way to quit your video game addiction. I tried playing this song on there, and somebody told me I’m lucky I didn’t get a lifetime ban for “playing Falkous.”
Mudhoney: Youth Body Expression Explosion
Oooh damn girl, it doesn't matter that you have pinstripes and heels, when you drop your backpack with the Thundercats belt buckle onto the floor of the subway and it makes a ton of noise, we're all going to look at you like you're less attractive than you are.
DJ? Acucrack: Mal Fader
Mal Fader is the song to hear when you're walking through the park after work, thinking evil of everybody who ever done gone did you wrong. If you have enough singularity of purpose, you can usually shake off the bad feelings by the time you get to the subway.
Pitchshifter: Microwaved
I actually don't believe in the Microwave as applied to food. I think it's a flavor destroyer. I'd rather eat cold pizza and listen to this song.
Lightning Bolt: The Sublime Freak
So one time I had a girlfriend and none of her friends at all seemed to like me even a bit. Probably because I came from the suburbs and didn't ride a motorcycle and didn't have a stupid moustache and didn't have any tattoos yet and didn't really enjoy alt-country music. One night, the girlfriend (god bless her) said hey, this friend of mine is in a band, let's go see the show I think you'll really like it! And we get there and the band sounds kind of like a low-rent Lightning Bolt, and I go up to him after the show thinking I'll flash some cred, and I say hey, you ever hear of this band called Lightning Bolt? And the guy's like Yeah, the guitarist is Lightning Bolt's brother! DNA-sniffing, derivative piece of crap.
Fresh Espresso: Diamond Pistols
If this song was a person, they would definitely drive a nice car, but the windows would be down and they’d be playing cool music and you wouldn’t feel that bad about yourself for driving your dead grandfather’s beater.
J-Dilla (feat. Madlib and Guilty Sampson): Baby
This is a good song to listen to when you're walking through the park and you see a guy in front of you that you don't really want to talk to so you need to slow down your pace so you don't pull up next to him and have to make small talk even though your post-work stride has been destroyed and you make yourself blame him.
