Monks: Drunken Maria
The Monks are from the 60s, maybe around when the world was ceasing to be a simpler place? Oh wait.
Eagles of Death Metal: Speaking in Tongues
Here’s how I know this whole mixtape thing is taking off: I saw two different people yesterday with cassette tape tattoos. Just because your tattoos suck doesn’t mean you have to dislike mine.
Baboon: Evil
I wore a great Baboon t-shirt like once a week for two years, which is a terrible idea if it’s a white t-shirt, you sweat a lot to begin with, and you’re living in desert climates.
Hellbent: Chromed
I think this song would just miss my sex mix, although its middle sections are certainly good enough. Maybe if I was more into leather.
LCD Soundsystem: Dance Yrself Clean
Allow me to play the role of the crank for once: I have a hard time with people who desbribe LCD Soundsystem as “dance punk.” This band is punk in the same way that National Lampoon’s Vacation is a monster movie. Your average LCD Soundsystem song is longer than most punk albums. Still, this song is so all over the place and enjoyable.
Vitro: Bucket
I found this CD on sale for a dollar at that record store over by Fuddruckers; not even used, it was a radio station promo. I had heard of Vitro because they did half a song on the Spawn soundtrack, with fucking SILVERCHAIR, and the song was unbelievably good. I’ve never ever been able to find anything out about this band, where they're from, what happened to them. Partly it's hard to google band names with only one word in them. I’m not terribly surprised I couldn’t find a video for this song.
12 Rounds: Sunshine
Not for much longer, I’ve been seeing the days getting shorter. We’re firmly in the second half.
The Prodigy: Breathe
I remember working in an office about four years after this song was big, and this guy who was a little older and had a creeper vibe was like “Ah man I remember going to the clubs, did you ever hear that song Breathe by Prodigy? I used to have wicked good times in the club to that song!” I could easily envision that guy freaking out to this song in a loud, dark, public space while everybody else slowly backed away.
Filter: Take Another
I still haven’t finished being disappointed in what happened to this band. I doubt I ever will finish being disappointed in what happened to this band.
Arthur Brown: Fire
They say that in the new Beavis and Butthead series, the characters will be allowed to say “Fire” again, and I think this reversal is one of the last remaining things that makes America great. This song has been sampled and remixed by everything from Marilyn Manson to hip hop.
Powerman 5000: Automatic
I was uhhhh engaging in feats of strength with my girlfriend the other day and usually I’ll be a lot more deliberate about what's playing (if anything even at all) but she engaged me in the feats of strength before I had a chance to fix what was playing. When this song came on I froze up at first, realzing it wasn't appropriate for the mood lighting I use for feats of strength, but she was like “Is this Powerman 5000? I used to listen to them all the time when I was in high school!”
Pailhead: Don't Stand in Line
I actually did some standing in line the other day at this shitshow of a place called Pantera bread. Never try to buy ice coffee from a bread place. They didn’t have caps or cream. And then I saw this guy who looks like a guy I know who had an affair and left his wife like two months before she was about to have their kid, and I started thinking about how fun it would be to whip the full thing of coffee into the side of his face, and how that action would be severely enhanced by having a lid on my coffee. So now every time I get coffee and it has a lid, I think about throwing it into the sides of peoples’ heads and how maybe the straw could go into their eye.
Stabbing Westward & Wink: Torn Apart
Speaking of the Spawn soundtrack. Speaking of the summer of lickable Spawn tattoos over our nipples. Speaking of the Spawn rings they gave away at the movie theater that turned all our fingers green.
Zager & Evans: In the Year 2525
I heard this song ONE TIME when I was a kid. I can’t even figure what radio station my dad listened to in the car that would have been playing this song. It’s so sci fi. I never heard it again, but I remembered it for more than twenty years, until the internet came out and you could purchase songs legally on iTunes.
Soul Coughing: The Idiot Kings
The great thing about Soul Coughing is that you can play almost any song of theirs at any time and it’ll fit whatever the hell you’re doing. Parents, feats of strength, hip hop kids, church, whatever. I'm haughtily disappointed that YouTube doesn't have a video for this one except a solo performance by the singer, who clearly hates having to sing Soul Coughing songs when he'd rather be singing his own shit about Jesus.
The New Pornographers: Mystery Hours
I don’t know anything about this band. I don’t know who Neko Case is. They remind me of Spoon but I don’t know anything about Spoon either. Is there a band called Elbow? But whenever this band comes on random, I stop and listen.
Bright Eyes: Lover I Don't Have to Love
That same job where the Breathe guy was, I got to experience working with an emo kid in a cubicle environment for the first time. Do they even still have emo kids? Did they get swept up into hipsterism? Are they now shoegaze kids? Anyway, this emo kid, who I called Disco Dave, told me that he really liked Bright Eyes but had a tough time seeing them (him) in concert because there were always people in the audience who would be shouting “Conor, are you sad?”
Aerosmith: Dream On
I didn’t know this song was Aerosmith until well after I had Pump on tape. Like maybe 5 years ago was when somebody told me. I also recently mistook a LKed Zeppelin song called "Fool in the Rain" for Billy Joel.
