Javelin: Cowpoke

I'm pretty sure I like the album this songs come from better than the year's other more-hyped Western-theme concept effort by Danger Mouse and Daniele Luipi. This one more catches the spirit of the campfire and the taste of lizard jerky, and any time you can play something with a little bit of eccentricity opposed to dead straight serious, I'm with you.

The Gories: I Think I've Had It

I find it interesting that when an infant on the subway begins to shriek, no matter how high the volume and pitch of the wail a full 33% of females aged 25-33 will become hypnotized by the sound and start to grin like it's the nicest sound they've ever heard. Everybody else curdles on the inside and makes nasty faces at the fat guy with the nice watch who smells like he hasn't washed his shirt since May.

Queens of the Stone Age: If Only

Here's a joke I made on Facebook last week that didn't get any traction at all: "That Bonnie Vair lady has such an alluring voice, I want to say 'Hubba hubba!' but I can't find a picture of her on the internet. I bet she has a beard or something." Josh Homme is about as far as I can go with the male falsetto.

Gene Farris: Come On Home

My new singular goal is not to live alone, but to make money off this blog so I can afford to pay an intern to put videos for missing songs up on YouTube.

The Bloodhound Gang: The Inevitible Return of the Great White Dope

How embarrassing is it to put an album called "Hooray for Boobies!" on the birthday list you give your mom when you're turning 22? That said, very specifically because of this album, I'll often answer the phone saying "Hello mother dear," when she calls.

Ruth Ruth: Uninvited

This video is a perfect example of the cluelessness lower-level rock bands brought to video making in the mid nineties. This video is as terrible as the rest of the album this song comes off of, which is a shame, because this one song made its way into many early college-era radio shows I did.

The Velvet Underground: I'm Waiting For the Man

I can understand the appeal of going with the nickname BJ ("Come sit on Uncle BJ's lap!"), but there's a baseball player named BJ Upton whose first name is BOSSMAN. WHY WOULDN'T YOU GO BY BOSSMAN? No wonder he never lived up to his potential as a baseball player.

Marilyn Manson: The Golden Age of Grotesque

Okay it had to happen. And I am somewhat ashamed to admit it. But I am not afraid to admit it.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Stagger Lee

I love this contemporary take on an old-timey legend. Just the sort of thing Nick Cave was made to do.

Jesus Lizard: Cold Water

As the summer winds down, I've been taking many cold showers. Because ladies, I can see through all of your clothing in this humid weather. I promise to not use this knowledge for evil purposes.

Molotov: Noko

You ever say "Thank you sir" out of instinct and realize you're talking to a lady, so you add "ma'am" to the end of it real fast so you say "Thank you sir ma'am"? It happened to me today at the burrito stand, and even though the lady didn't speak English, I still felt like an asswipe.

Manu Chao: The Bleedin Clown

I mean, if I WAS the type to try a hallucinogenic chemical once every blue moon, this would probably be an excellent album to listen to on repeat as I waited for the experience to wrap itself up.

Cursive: Dorothy at Forty

Is this Spoon? Is it the New Pornographers? I don't know who Cursive is at all or how I came to be in the possession of this album, but the song always gets a play when it shows up on the shuffle feature.

George Russell: Ye Hypocrite, Ye Beelzebub

And when I close my eyes and envision you these days, it’s not with a blowing instrument I see in your mouth, but with a stringed instrument tucked underneath your chin.

Brainiac: Indian Poker (Pt. 3)

You gotta start this link at 43 seconds in order to get the proper effect of this song. You don't want to listen to Indian Poker Pt. 2.

Propellerheads: Take California

A classic track from the late-90s electronic peak that never really amounted to much aside from leading us eventually to DUBSTEP.

Roni Size/Reprazent: Watching Windows

Jesus Christ it took me so long until I knew how to pronounce "Reprazent." It's not like I even knew I was wrong. I just kept saying "Re-pray-zent," but all that saying was in my mind because I didn't hang out with anybody who I could drop the name to in conversation, casual or otherwise.

Self: Cinderblocks For Shoes

Want to have a bad time? Try putting together next week's mix while your adult male roommates watch Harry Potter and say things like "Dumbledore is the most powerful wizard in the world!"

Earth Leakage Trip: No Idea

Catch the "Poltergeist" samples in this song. "Poltergeist" has been the only movie to give me genuine chills as an adult (aside from Sex and the City 2). "Poltergeist 2" I watched as a child, and it has haunted every mezcal-drinking experience I've ever had.
