Slim Whitman: I Remember You

I’m somewhat foggy on what Slim Whitman’s legacy is. I sort of remember him as being a bit of a joke in those adult comic strips I read when I was a kid, but I think with a voice like that I’d be more worried about him stealing my girl.

The Bangles: Hazy Shade of Winter

The first poster I ever had in my room was The Bangles. Definitely learned at an early age that it was parentally encouraged to have crushes on female rock stars. It was all about the redhead. I had that poster until I got a SummerSlam ’89 (Hulk and Beefcake vs Macho and Zeus) poster.

Dirty Beaches: Lord Knows Best

I discovered this guy at the liquor store. I asked the punk Hebrew (I really do think this is a fair and accurate description of the person) what he was listening to, and he said Dirty Beaches, that it reminded him of David Lynch. I think the band name is really appropriate. It’s like foggy dark surf music. One of my favorite finds of the year so far.

Beck: Fuckin' With My Head (Mountain Dew Rock)

It didn’t seem like Beck was the kind of guy who was going to age well if at all. He’s a stark reminder of how time works in, like, five year increments.

Cop Shoot Cop: Nowhere

I decided to walk home tonight from a few subway stops away from my home. I’m starting to get a moral dilemma. Because I’m such a professional walker, I know how to slow down perfectly and then hit a crosswalk in stride, even if it’s one of those orange Don’t Walk hands. The problem happens when, like, tourists or old people on the other side of the street see that I’m going, and think that they can go without paying attention to traffic. A lot of them just go headlong into traffic. Part of me wants to say Hey, c’mon, if you get hit it’s totally your fault. Is that a sign that I need more Jesus in my life?

Guns N' Roses: Used to Love Her

My parents were really concerned with my listening to this album, but especially this song (I don’t think they paid any attention to “One in a Million”). I remember one time listening to them airing their concerns to some couples friends of theirs. I was at the top of the stairs, they thought I was asleep.

Mojo Nixon: Don't Ask Me Why I Drink

Speaking of moral concerns, my friend listens to my mixtapes with his children!!!! I guess it can’t be worse than having to explain Viagra ads.

Burning Brides: Glass Slipper

I have a vague recollection of seeing this band back in that part of my life when I was going to see lots of shows with my friend who worked at the rock station. He loved hip-hop the most but all we went to see was rock. I like to think of it as him valuing my opinion, but that might be a fanciful notion. Burning Brides had an attractive girl in their band, which is ALWAYS a good gimmick, except she didn’t seem too into it. Maybe she didn’t appreciate being a gimmick.

El-P: Flyentology

This is a great song to walk to. If you can line the beat up with your stride, you can do good hand movements in line with the music, but in a totally concealable way where observers shouldn't know what you’re up to.

UNKLE: Lawless

Speaking of lawless, near the end of my walk home, I saw an offroad vehicle with a sticker that said “REPEAL OBAMACARE IMMEDIATELY” and I pissed on the driver side door handle. This isn’t a blog about politics.

Nine Inch Nails: Into the Void

Before “The Fragile” came out, they teased it on MTV with parts of this song (Try to save my self but my self keeps slippin’!) and I’ll admit, I was a little perplexed as to what it was all going to sound like. Glad that whole thing worked out.

Mr. Scruff: Get a Move On

I remember when I was 23 or so and working my first city data entering job, there was this guy there who was old but seemed kind of cool. He talked about how he used to ride a longboard around when he was my age. But his not riding his longboard actually stands out as cooler to me than the one older guy who I do see around the city that DOES ride his longboard. This one kind of cool older guy, though, tipped me to the origins of this song and how it wasn't just used in techno remixes and car commercials. After he quit that bad job I saw him in a bar a year or two later and I was still working that bad job and I pretended I didn’t see him.

Phoenix: Love Like a Sunset Pt. 1

Phoenix are like U2 in that 90% of their songs sound exactly the same and you can name that band in three notes or less. Except I like their one song more than I like U2's one song. This song fits into the 10% of songs that don’t sound like normal Phoenix. This one sounds like music they would play at the beginning of an 80s medical drama.

The Meteors: Johnny Remember Me

Listening to a poor copy of this song is like having an interesting conversation with somebody who is brushing their teeth.

The Stooges: Raw Power

Question for the gentlemen only: when you were a kid in grade school, did you worry about not taking long leaks at school because you thought other kids would judge the size of your johnson by the length of time it took you to pee?

Daniel Johnston: Casper the Friendly Ghost

Bubbles’ shitty friend wasn’t Casper, right, he was that other guy? Tully? I hated that movie so hard.

The Legendary Stardust Cowboy: I Hate CD's

Somebody once told me they loved Legendary Stardust Cowboy and I pressed her further, I was like, You’ve heard of that guy? and she said she was lying, she just thought I’d like her better for pretending she liked him. She might have been right but the truth is murky on things like that.

Underworld: Push Downstairs

You should probably put this song on your sex mix.

Mutha's Day Out: Locked

I saw this video one time late night on MTV and bought the album the next day. I never heard from these guys again except to get skewered on an episode of Beavis and Butthead, and I constantly had to defend having this album in my collection for the rest of high school and a little bit of college too.
