The Ventures: Hawaii Five-O

Joe Hallenbeck: Since it's the '90s, you don't just smack a guy in the face. You say something cool first.
Jimmy Dix: Like, "I'll be back."
Joe Hallenbeck: Only better than that. Hit him with a surfboard...
Jimmy Dix: "Surf's up!"
Joe Hallenbeck: Something like that.

Lawson and Four More: If You Want Me You Can Find Me

This song is a late-night favorite in the poker room I sometimes play in. I always thought it was Velvet Underground until recently. Mark well this mistake, for musical misconceptions are going to play a key role in this week’s mix.

Devo: Whip It

I am incredibly sorry that the official video with the guys from Devo using whips to tear off pretty girls’ dresses and slash rednecks’ cigarettes out of their mouths isn’t available for embedding. Why would a band not allow their videos to be embedded? Can anybody offer a compelling reason?

Z-Man: No Cure for Sugar

For the longest time I thought this song was by Hieroglyphics, which makes me something of an asshole, considering it’s one of the top-10 most played songs on my iTunes.

Born Ruffians: This Sentence Will Ruin/Save Your Life

The night I finished grad school, it was about 15 degrees out. I think I was drunk before my last class. I was certainly drunk after my last class. I decided to walk from Central Square to Davis Square for reasons that are hazy to me right now. According to this link, it would have taken about an hour. So goddamn cold. I listened to this song on repeat the whole way. Somewhere in the mighty Midwest, Ryan Ahern gasps once again.

Rivers Cuomo: Annie's Song

NEVER underestimate my ignorance. I didn’t know this was a cover of a John Denver song until I played it for my aunt and she went "John Denver!" The more important question I’m asking myself here is why I was playing musics for my aunt.

Evil Nine: Behemoth

So far as I can tell this is a song about a gigantic man made of stone stomping around and blasting suckers in the head with a stone mallet.

Firewater: Weird to Be Back

We had about 100 extra Coorses in the fridge the other day so some friends came over and helped me both drink them and also QC this mix. They said this song would clear the room out. Never mind the ignorance behind that statement, the real gist of my rage (which would stay with me all day, culminating in my urinating into the garbage can at a local tavern) is that these mixes aren’t meant to keep any room filled. These aren’t theme mixes with titles like “Emergency Dance Mix” and “Mix With Girls Names in the Songs” and “Mix for a Rainy Day.” I am here to display the length and perhaps the girth of my overall mixbag. Perhaps you learn something new and interesting. Perhaps you share with me something new and interesting. But please, don’t take these mixes to be themes or DJ mixes of any sort.

Bill Withers: Ain't No Sunshine

me: You want to write a guest note for one of my songs this week?
Sean: what song
me: Ain't no sunshine.
Sean: no
got any bon iver on there?

Gorillaz: November Has Come

I don’t even remember having listened to this song one time, yet it’s still among the most-played on my iTunes. The amount of times I’ve lent out my iPod for more than five hours can be counted on one hand. I’m baffled. I don’t even think I like Gorillaz that much. They’re not anybody I stop on when I’m shuffling through on random.

Squarepusher: I Wish You Could Talk

Whenever I get around to making that “Hey Mope” mixtape, featuring sad songs that don’t use either acoustic guitar or male falsettos, this song’s going to start it off.

The Blues Brothers: Rubber Biscuit

Back when bowling alleys were bowling alleys and you could stroll in on a Friday night and play a carefree coupla games without having to wait for three hours because all the hipsters are showing off for their skinny girlfriends, only they drop the bowling balls on their toes and hop around... back then there would be jukeboxes, and this song would be on all the jukeboxes.

Powerman 5000: Neckbone

me: Do you want to write a guest note for one of my songs this week?
Devon: Uh yeah, I could do that.
I like yours better but sometimes I disagree and want you to write something else.
me: That's a perfect time to leave a comment you know.
But I don't always have an easy time doing writeups if only because I have so many to do.
So I have seven left for this week but I thought you'd be good for Neckbone.
Devon: wait? Neckbone?
I didn't know you had that
me: I got that.
Devon: I always thought you didn't like that album.
me: I got it late in the game.
In a used-CD store in Boulder CO on my move back east.
Devon: that is late, considering the whole rap rock thing was way dead at that point. But they always did it better than the Limp Bizkits and friends people anyway.
me: Well they had that good radio song in like 1999 which helped.
Devon: yeah you liked that album.
I remember that.
Space Metal
me: Always enjoyed a touch of space.
Devon: When does Scissorfight make it in?

Bad Company: Mo' Fire

Special props for creating a video that looks more dated than any not-twenty-years-old video I’ve seen in a long, long time.

The Gories: Ghostrider

In the continuing spirit of disclosing my ignorance to you, I knew there were two Henry-Rollins-related versions of this song, and then I heard this version and I thought it was the original for a few years until I found out recently that no, the original is by Alan Vega’s Suicide.

Copywrite: Won't Stop

This song has all the charm of an old guy in tighties slowly rubbing lotion into his thighs, but still.

Mark Mothersbaugh: Ping Island/Lightning Strike Rescue Op

With all the hate and cynicism in my heart, I still smile and do ninja rolls across the floor whenever I hear this song.

Cream: Sunshine of Your Love

This song is brought to you by cocktails made with the ingredient cream.

Revolting Cocks: Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?

I’ve never played any of them Duke Nukem vidja games, but I read a review that said the glory-hole crassness of the new one is par for the course. Duke Nukem ain’t got nothing on RevCo.
