Walter Wanderly: Summer Samba
The version of this song that’s on my official playlist comes from a Fat Boy Slim mix that has a distorted breakdown. For the purposes of this mix, I think the original works just fine.
Daft Punk: Around the World
I played this song more than most songs when I did my college radio show from 1996 to 2000. It still holds up.
Peter Bjorn and John: Amsterdam
If you lived with the King of the Mixtape, you could hear his roommate’s discussion about how Peter Bjorn and John’s most recent album is really terrible. All I know is if you play this song somewhere during a party, the chances of people making out with strangers by the end of the night goes up by 15%.
Los Amigos Invisibles: Una Disco Llena
A key record? Who’s running the translations around these parts? Shouldn't it be Una DISCA Llena?
Jurassic 5: Quality Control
Sorry, no hip-hop ghetto this week. We’re moving this week's hip-hop representative to the front of the line.
Mongo Santamaria: Watermelon Man
If your name is Mongo Santamaria, it’s mandatory that you have plenty of experience drinking Bloody Leroys. If I’m hungover enough on Saturday morning, I’m going to make a batch of these and drink them until I’m right.
X: Cyrano De Berger's Back
I didn’t go to my senior prom. Sure, I went to an all-boy’s high school, and it’s not like I had a girlfriend, but I’m going to tell myself I didn’t go to that prom because they didn’t have a band that would play a song like this one.
The Animals: We Gotta Get Out of This Place
That’s what the Vancouver Canucks are saying about Boston right about now.
Guns N Roses: You Could Be Mine
It was really nice of Axl Rose to let Arnold Schwarzenegger write the lyrics to this song. I saw Terminator 2 in the theater 23 times.
Goon Moon: Tip Toe
When the moon is hanging close to the horizon and it’s big and full and orange from pollution and there’s heat lightning flashing off on the other side of the horizon and it’s eerie quiet, that’s the goon moon.
Pitchshifter: Dead Battery
I used to have an internet dating profile saying that I didn’t want to meet any dead batteries.
Nirvana: Drain You
If you’d like a compelling read, try out this story about the year 1991 and the comparisons between two (three?) albums released that year: Nirvana’s Nevermind, and Gun N Roses’ Use Your Illusion 1 & 2.
The Toadies: I Burn
Where I work, there’s a separate pod for the creative group. These fuckers are always eating tons of cool looking food: candies, cakes, chicken wings. My group is lucky to get some old pizza leftover from somebody else’s meetings. So yes, sometimes I do burn. And that’s why I started this blog: to fill in the spaces in my life that are left wide open by the jealousy of not getting to eat chicken wings at work.
Ram Jam: Black Betty
I met a girl once who swore that the lyrics to this song were “Black Betty, slam the lamb.” She’s one of the biggest hookers I’ve ever met.
Chemlab: Codeine, Glue, and You
Some people do really strange things to maintain their weird drug habits. I go to the gym to maintain my dessert habits.
Rage Against the Machine: Sleep Now in the Fire
I had a discussion today about Woodstock ’99 and what a disaster it was on every level (baking concrete and massive accumulations of human waste). What I remember about this wretched event was smoking weed for the first time in like five years, and Rage Against the Machine bringing the wrath of righteous fury unlike anything I’ve ever seen on a stage.
Dessert Sessions: Winners
Like this youtube clip didn’t pick up tons of extra love right after Charlie Sheen died.
